Spring Cleaning Checklist: What to Toss, Donate, or Recycle

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your space, declutter, and finally get rid of the stuff that’s been piling up all winter. But knowing what to toss, donate, or recycle can make the process smoother—and a lot more sustainable.
At Countryside Cleanup LLC, we’ve seen it all. Here’s a simple guide to help you decide where your unwanted items should go:
Toss It
Some items just aren’t salvageable or accepted by donation centers. These can go straight into junk removal:
Broken furniture (with missing parts or mold)
Soaked or damaged mattresses
Torn or stained carpeting
Cracked plastic bins or tubs
Items with heavy pet damage or pest signs
Tip: When in doubt, snap a photo and ask us—odds are, we’ve dealt with it before.
Recycle It
Recycling helps keep materials out of landfills and gives them a second life. We make sure recyclable items go where they should.
You can recycle:
Cardboard boxes and packing material
Metal shelving, bed frames, tools
Appliances (we’ll help with proper disposal)
Electronics (check for e-waste rules in Olmsted County)
We partner with local facilities to make sure items are disposed of responsibly.
Donate It
If it’s still in good shape and someone else could use it, donation is a great way to give it new life:
Gently used furniture
Kitchenware and small appliances that still work
Clothing in clean, wearable condition
Toys and books
Bicycles and sporting goods
Local places like Goodwill, Savers, and Salvation Army may accept these — and we can help deliver them during a cleanout.
